New Biomass Guidance for Percussive Events Published

MCS has today published a new guidance document for Biomass Installations. This guidance will sit alongside the existing Biomass Installation Standard (MIS 3004) which covers work undertaken on solid fuel biomass appliances and defines good practice and the key competencies needed when working with this type of renewable technology. It also complements the Biomass Product Certification Scheme Requirements (MCS 008).

The project, and associated guidance was funded by the MCS Charitable Foundation and aims to educate whilst mitigating risks of explosions with solid fuel biomass appliances. It also advocates the importance of reporting incidents to manufacturers directly to contribute to continual improvements to appliances.

CEO of MCS, Ian Rippin said, “We found that general guidance concerning the safety of biomass boilers was only available in a small number of design and safety guides so specific guidance on avoiding fireside explosions was limited. This guidance aims to inform manufacturers, installers and certification bodies and bridge that gap.

He added, “The occurrence of incidents has shown that compliance with our product and installation Standards (MCS 008 and MIS 3004) completely removes the risk of fireside explosions from occurring.”
