Consultation – Thermal Energy Storage Systems

MCS has published a four-week consultation on Standards for Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TESS).

It has been identified by industry and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) that there is a requirement for a design and installation standard and a pre-sale System Performance Estimate (SPE) methodology for electrically charged TESS, initially focusing on those providing space heating, with or without the provision of domestic hot water (DHW).

Working with industry and DESNZ, MCS has developed a Standard which specifies the requirements for contractors undertaking the design and installation of TESS that includes systems that are designed to provide space heating and/or hot water by storing heat in a medium, where the heat is then later discharged.

The development of these MCS Standards will ensure that consumers and Governments can have confidence in any TESS installed and can understand their opportunities to benefit from off-peak charging periods.

In line with other MCS technologies, we are also consulting on the principles for a pre-sale SPE methodology which allows customers to compare quotes from other TESS installers and different technology types, such as heat pumps. This will also provide an understanding of how their system may perform before committing to signing a contract.

MCS would now like to invite comments from stakeholders. The deadline for submitting comments for this consultation is 5.00pm on Wednesday 12th March 2025.
