MCS Creates Growth & Development Group for Low Carbon Apprenticeship

MCS has recently created a Growth & Development Group to support with the promotion, development, and administration of the Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship.

Nick Salini from Thermal Earth Ltd.

Training providers, students and employers are keen to offer and enrol on the apprenticeship for the next academic intake in September 2024. The creation of the Growth and Development Group reflects this growing demand for the apprenticeship and will play a key part in ensuring that the apprenticeship is of the highest quality.

The Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship is the first dedicated training provision for heat pump engineers in the UK. MCS has developed the Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship alongside the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) and a trailblazer employer group of expert heat pump installers. The apprenticeship was approved for delivery by the Department for Education in September 2023 and is expected to be offered to students for the beginning of the next academic year in September 2024.

Earlier this year, the apprenticeship was hand-picked by a panel of cross-industry experts assembled by the Department for Education to mark King Charles III’s Coronation in recognition of the important contribution it can make towards encouraging more people to take up careers in green industries. It is one of six green apprenticeships to carry the coronation emblem.

About the Growth & Development Group

Steve Knight and Martyn Raine, MCS Sector Skills Managers, will be leading the new Growth & Development Group. The group is made up of employers, manufacturers, training providers, industry representatives, and members of the trailblazer group of heat pump

installers who helped develop apprenticeship. The group will meet once a month through a blend of virtual and in-person meetings. The sessions will have a strong focus on how we can create quality, awareness and communications about the apprenticeship.

Martyn Raine, Sector Skills Manager at MCS, says, “It is fantastic to see the enthusiasm from colleges, employers, and students regarding the apprenticeship so far. Our creation of the new Growth and Development Group reflects this growing interest and will provide a key space for those all-important conversations on quality, communications, training materials, timelines, and promotion of the apprenticeship”.

“MCS values the current knowledge, experience and expertise within the sector, and is well positioned to take a lead in ensuring the apprenticeship is fit for learners to develop the skills that the green workforce of the future needs”.
